Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002, which came into force on 1 January 2005, gives you the right to access information held by Scottish public authorities, including Assessors and Electoral Registration Officers.

Information which has already been published is described in the Fife Assessor’s Publication Scheme, which lists the types of information held by the Assessor. Publication schemes have to specify the classes of information which each authority publishes or intends to publish, detail how it publishes the information and indicate whether information is provided free or for a charge. Most of the information detailed in the Fife Assessor's scheme is, however, already available to the public.

All publication schemes require to be approved by the Scottish Information Commissioner , an independent official responsible for overseeing the operation of freedom of information in Scotland.

From January 2005, any written request for information to a public authority is regarded as a request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act. You do not have to quote the Act, but you do have to make the request in writing either by correspondence, fax or e-mail.
