Registering to Vote
You need to be registered to vote in UK elections and referendums. Everyone who is registered to vote is listed on the electoral register.
A new electoral registration system called Individual Electoral Registration (IER) was brought in recently. This means:
- you are now responsible for registering yourself to vote.
- you need to provide your national insurance number and date of birth
- you can now register online Register to vote at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
Who can register
To register to vote, you must:
- Be resident in the electoral area
- Be a qualifying British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union citizen aged 16 or over
- 14 and 15 year olds can register but cannot vote until they are 16 (Scottish Parliamentary or Local Government Elections) or 18 (UK or European Parliamentary Elections )
- Not be subject to any legal incapacity to vote. European Union Member States Commonwealth Countries and other groups can register to vote in special circumstances:
- British citizens living abroad
- Members of the Armed Forces
- Crown servants or British Council employees
- Eligible voters with no fixed address
